Review: Kindred Blood by: Dawne Dominique

eBook, 237 pages (per Kindle)
Published (first published November 9th 2011)
ASIN: B0060MYASA
Source: Author, for the purpose of an honest review
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: The First, book #3
Best read in order: book #2 & #3 yes, book #1 works as a stand-alone
Stars: 3
Flames: 3

Kindred Blood picks up a few weeks after Dark Diary. Daniella has decided they need to discover the meaning behind Damien’s cryptic last words. This takes them to London. The trip is dual purposed as her and Aiden intend to marry in Scotland. Overall it seems like happy days are in the future for Daniella and Aiden. Things quickly take a turn for the worst in a tale full of scheming vampires who have some very vile intentions towards The First.

Readers are introduced to several new characters in this world. Some are the evil foes that were in cahoots with Damien. Two of the new characters really caught my attention, Spencer and I’m leaving the other unnamed, he could be a potential spoiler. The unnamed one I have a feeling readers will be seeing more of him in the next book. He brought some hefty mystery and intrigue to the final chapter. He was very cryptic in his forewarnings. I do love cryptic characters that you just know they know more than they are letting on.

I loved Spencer. He isn’t a typical human. He knows that there are other beings out in there in the world. Daniella hires him as her private investigator. She wants a different set of eyes to assist her in finding Aiden. She is hoping that he sees the different pieces of the puzzle differently than she does. He also does not go into denial or a total flip out mode when the world as he knows it suddenly changes.

I have issues with sex as punishment, sex as a means to break an individual into submission, or rape. After Aiden is kidnapped he experiences some of these things. He is not himself and in the midst of a starving bloodlust. He is consumed with guilt of infidelity. The author does not put into explicit details about what exactly happened to Aiden. It is just mentioned among the characters that were present when it happened. I did not like this, another form of torment would have been better for me.

My impressions of Daniella from Dark Diary were strong independent female. She has have lived for seven hundred years due to her methodical ways. She has always been very careful with her choices. That changes some in Kindred Blood. A couple of rash (not poor) decisions have horrible consequences for the people around her. This causes her to make some poor decisions in her haste to correct things. This almost seemed like a character change. These events did however make for some intense conflict and created some dramatic page turning chapters.

The revelations made in the final chapter guarantee some interesting new foes in Crimson Cries, book #4 of The First. I am very curious where the author will take this new information. I looked on the authors web site for information on the release date and did not see any.

Review: Dark Diary by Dawne Dominique

eBook, 208 pages or so the Kindle claims
Published August 9th 2010 by Purple Sword Publications LLC
ISBN 13: 9781936165537
Source: Author, for the purpose of an honest review
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: The First, book #2
Best read in order: no, both work as a stand alone
Stars: 4
Flames: 3

I found something interesting in the pages of Dark Diary that I’m almost positive that I’ve never read before. The female Daniella is the centuries old vampire that has always lived her life as a loner and never taken a long term lover, much less a human lover for the long term. She has secrets that need to remain hidden. A man with a job in law enforcement would never work. He would have too many questions that she could never answer. Aiden is a human detective that meets a captivating female while he is working his punishment case of a breaking and entry. I liked this perspective. It was new, something different.

Daniella is also one of The First. She was born with the need to feed on blood. She is very different from her vampire kin. The differences is the main reason she has lived as alone as possible throughout the years. Things are about to change for her though. A random burglary has set a rather horrific chain of events into fast motion, placed circumstances onto her doorstep, sent a serial killer bombarding into her life and hurting the few people she holds dear.

Aiden had been investigating a string of puzzling and viscous murders when his captain sends him out on a breaking and entering case. He’s pissed that he’s been pulled from the serial killer case due to an arrest gone wrong, now he gets reprimanded in the form of a B&E case that he feels is beneath him. The problem is that he cannot seem to take his mind off of the female whose home was broken into. She is in his every thought and even invading his dreams and fantasies.

I am pleased to see that the next book in the series continues with Aiden and Daniella still as the main characters. I liked them together. They brought out qualities in each other that they never knew they had. I am also eager to see what the “changes that are coming.” The first chapter and the last chapter are written as Daniella’s confessions into a diary, her dark diary.

Review: Eden's Hell by Dawne Dominique

eBook, 224 pages
Published July 30th 2009 by Purple Sword Publications LLC
ISBN 13: 9781936165209
Source: Author, for the purpose of an honest review
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: The First, book #1

Addison has lived a long life. He is at the point where he is no longer happy with his existence. He hasn’t been at anything close to happy for many centuries. He’s been hurt deeply on more than one occasion and he is now cursed for all eternity because of it. The ex-wife that he hates has stalker tendencies and just to torment him some more she purchased the home next to his.

Eva has always found herself attracted to losers. It shouldn’t surprise her that the current loser has put her life in danger in his attempts at becoming a vampire. As she runs for her life, fleeing the house where she was caged like an animal she sees salvation walking on the beach. Little does she know that the man enjoying a stroll on the beach is the exact creature that she was running from.

Addison and Eva give their readers a sweet love story. He wants to keep her away from the clutches of Satrina at all costs. He knows the evil that Satrina is capable of. Addison also knows that she doesn’t follow the rules that they must live by. Eva is scared. She has been manipulated into signing a contract, she has been introduced to creatures she never knew existed, and to top it all off she gets Addison as her unlikely protector.

Huge surprise ending. I never saw any of what transpired at the ending happening. It’s a vampire love story so obviously someone will most likely get turned (veiled) into a vampire. I never pictured any of the events that happened leading to the tourney on the beach. Kudos to Dominique for creating such an interesting look into vampire folklore. I am very pleased that
I have the following two books in this series on my Kindle just waiting to be read. I am very curious to where she will take this new era and new evil.

I enjoyed how the mythos of Lillith played into Dominique’s brand of vampire. Eden’s Hell was a surprising mix of biblical references, vampire myths, and a love that can overcome any obstacle thrown in its path.

Blog Tour: The First Series by Dawne Dominique

Eden's Hell, I: The First

In the beginning…

God created man and called him Adam, a fine specimen replicated in his own image. He then created woman to ease Adam’s loneliness and named her Lillith. Unfortunately, God realized his mistake too late in giving woman free will, for she would rule her domain—not man.

When Lillith left Adam, God created another for his first-born son and gave her the name Eve and a kingdom called Eden, but by then it was too late, for he’d unleashed Hell into the world of man.

Dark Diary, II: The First

Daniella Rolfe, a seven-century old First vampire is unwittingly drawn together with a City of Winnipeg detective, who happens to be investigating a string of some rather bizarre serial murders. It doesn’t take long for her to discover that this mere mortal man holds more power over her than any she's ever known.

And Aiden…he's only dreamed about women like Daniella.

Blood battles and broken vows are just the beginning of Daniella Rolfe’s woes.

Kindred Blood, III: The First

There is nothing thicker—or stronger—than kindred blood.

Being married in Scotland sounds like the perfect romantic getaway, doesn't it? For Daniella Rolfe and Aiden Blackmore, the nightmare they'd left behind was just the beginning.  When Aiden is kidnapped, Daniella will go to any lengths to ensure he's brought safely back to her, no matter the amount of blood to be shed. Together with Spencer Dalton, a private investigator she hired to help find Aiden, they begin to unravel more than they bargained for.

Broken vows are the least of Daniella's worries now.

*These books are erotic romance novels with strong sexual content*

Short Excerpt:  EDEN'S HELL, I: The First

Addison entered the bedroom, but stopped to listen to the lulling rhythm of Eva’s heartbeat. Its cadence flowed like a rush of warm water cascading over his body. Usually fatigued by the arrival of dawn, this night ended on a rush of energy.
Something about this female intrigued him. Hell, she’d sent all his common sense right out the window. He felt like a beached Corbina thrashing in the sand. There was something about her, perhaps a familiarity that unfortunately centuries of time and loneliness had erased from his memory.
His languid sigh echoed in the quiet of the bedroom as he moved to the platform bed. He waved a hand and the mattress and metal dais soundlessly slid to one side. He’d personally built the secret passage after the house had been constructed. No one knew of its existence, not even Satrina. Down there, he was truly safe—his sanctuary, and prison.
He descended the crudely cut steps of lichen-covered rock into bleak darkness where night creatures like him belonged. Halfway down, he stopped. His essence searched. Satisfied Eva remained safe, he continued into complete darkness.
Hewn walls glittered with damp rock, soil, and sand. At the snap of his fingers, a freestanding torch burst into flame. Shadows danced across the chamber walls. Although this was California, the chill of a place hidden forever from the sun seeped into his preternatural flesh, a blanket of ice that was forever his companion. His heartbeat slowed and he waited for the inevitable—its eventual stopping, as it always did until he fed again.
Loneliness tortured him here, but tonight it ripped through him like dull knives. This cloistered hole in the ground was the one place he could never escape from, and every dawn he returned, a perpetual reminder of what he was.
He closed his eyes, and the gentle caress of Eva’s essence rolled through him, making him despise the creature he was even more. Penance was penance, however, and the curse…all part and parcel. But with Eva here, he didn’t feel so alone anymore. He hadn’t realized how forlorn he’d become. It made the decision all that more right.
Satrina will never have her.
With laden limbs, he stripped off his clothes and lay upon the icy stone slab he called a bed. The torch sputtered as he extinguished it with a twist of his mind, and true darkness encompassed the chamber.

He waited, crouched behind a corner several blocks down from her domicile. He’d lingered and watched her so often that his feet had worn a groove in the cement. His eyes narrowed as Daniella disappeared into the night to hunt, but this time for vengeance. He grinned and shivered with morbid delight. Memories of past vindictive feedings brought a rush of blood that centralized between his legs. He’d never known a vampire like Daniella Rolfe. And never had he seen such a formidable, dominating creature when tracking game. No other held more beauty, or terror.
Slinking from his hiding place, he shrouded himself within a spell of deep shadows and followed, careful to keep his distance. She had uncanny territorial radar, a power he’d envied from the first moment he’d sensed it. As he tracked Daniella, he licked his lips to stop from drooling. It had been a long time since he’d seen this magnificent creature strike down prey.

Short Excerpt:  KINDRED BLOOD, II: The First

As Teanna walked past the observation room, Kon grabbed her arm and threw her inside. She flinched as her naked body slammed against the monitor, almost knocking the machine off the ledge.
“What in damnation was that all about? You were supposed to woo him, not rape him!” He swung and backhanded her across the face, the resounding slap screaming between them.
She wiped her palm across the cut on her lip. “That’s my way of wooing, Kon. If you don’t like it, too fucking bad! I tasted his blood. It’s useless. He hadn’t had a full feeding, which means Daniella’s blood hasn’t fused with his.”
Kon shook with rage. There was no taming this bitch. “You selfish, greedy wench. And whose fault was that?”
“We needed to secure him, and we did,” she retaliated hotly. “Wasn’t that part of your plan? Get Daniella out of the way and nab the detective? Now you expect me to woo and earn his trust after I tortured him? Jesus Christ, Kon! We need Daniella, not her pet! Now here’s what I propose we do. We’re going to stretch out the detective’s feedings. I will become his teat, and he the baby. When he sees me, he’ll know I’m that breast of mother’s blood; after that, I’ll just be a luscious tit to him. I’ll keep him fed, both nutritionally and sexually.”
Kon calmed with difficulty. This vamp’s stupidity knew no bounds, but on this, she was right, and he despised her all the more. “Daniella feeds every thirty days or she becomes rabid, like he is now. I knew you were a slut, Teanna, but...” He shook his head in disgust.
She drew herself to full height and loomed over him. “You still don’t get it, do you? Her blood hasn’t had a chance to fuse with his system. Once his plasma is completely replaced, it’s her blood that will complete the process from vampire to The First. We need Daniella! Get her here, and I’ll ensure Damien’s plan works. You may be head honcho, but I’m the one doing all the dirty work, so we’re doing it my way. Understand?”
“That is the plan,” he said icily.
She leaned close. “And if you ever, ever strike me again, I—will—kill—you. Plan or no fucking plan.” She turned and stomped out.
He went back to the monitor and carefully watched Aiden. Damien hadn’t heeded the risks involved with the serum. It had suppressed the thirst, yes, but all the test vamps eventually became immune to it—then the rage and madness followed. He’d tried to warn Damien. With this new test subject, perhaps there was a way of refining it.
