About the Author:

Cera duBois has a strong belief in never giving up on your dreams… Although Cera was unable to read due to dyslexia and a learning disability until she was in the fourth grade, she always had a story to tell. She wrote her first novel in eleventh grade when she had to keep a journal for her academic English class.

Since her life was far from exciting growing up as a farm girl in West Central Pennsylvania, she decided to rely on her imagination to give her something to write about. Over the course of the school year, she wrote a tangled romance set in the Deep South during the Civil War.

Becoming an author was her ultimate dream. Despite holding a BS in secondary social studies education from Penn State University, she currently works full-time as a medical secretary.

A mother of a teenage son and pre-teen daughter, she lives near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with her husband of nearly 20 years. If she isn’t sitting in a quiet corner with her laptop, warm days will find her in the English garden surrounding her house. Cera loves to read and is interested in history, romance, science fiction and the paranormal.

She also writes contemporary Westerns under her real name of Sara Walter Ellwood.

Excerpt:

“I’m in love with the man inside the vampire.”  Grace moved her hand to thread through his silky hair. When she rested the other over his heart, a soft sigh escaped his lips. Underneath her palm, the slow beat was barely noticeable.
His thumb grazed her cheekbone and slowly trailed down to the hollow of her throat. Her breathing quickened at the zinging anticipation as he caressed the pulse point where he’d claimed to have taken blood from her. He glanced at the spot with eyes as haunted as he sounded. “I’m not a man.”
            “But you were once.”
He met her gaze again. “Yes, once.”
His fingers lingered over her pulse. Her heart raced under his touch. She tilted her neck as if his touch awakened some base instinct to offer the sacrifice. “Do you still want my blood?”
Ian stepped away and locked his wide-eyed gaze onto hers. At last, he rasped, “No, I don’t want your blood. Oh, God, I still crave it. You have the sweetest I’ve ever had, but I will never hurt you again.”
She didn’t know what possessed her to do so, but she whispered, “You can take...some of it.”
He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he acidly said, “No, Grace. I can never taste your blood again. It would kill you.”
Fear of what she’d wanted him to do tumbled through her. She stepped away, and for a moment, she considered telling him to leave. How did she know any of this was real? She couldn’t imagine she’d ever freely offer a vampire her blood. Did she really believe him? He was sucking her into his insanity. But if this was true and he could make people do things against their will, maybe he could control her feelings.
“Maybe I should go?” Ian backed away another step and headed toward the counter where he’d left his dagger. He turned back to her with the sheath in his hand. Her heart shattered with the knowledge that, if he walked out the front door, she’d never see him again. “Goodbye, my sweet angel.”
His jagged murmur ripped at her soul as his eyes took on a blazing intensity and snared hers. She felt a pressure in her mind, and she knew what he intended to do. He wanted to erase her memories of him.
No!

By R.E. Robinson Jr

Blurb:

The world has been changed forever. Death and mutation have swept across the planet leaving some of the survivors altered into non-human races and gaining powers that would take time to comprehend. While at the market Evan’s group is ambushed and when he finally makes it back to the farm he finds out his wife has been abducted. Evan feels her abduction has everything to do with her power.

Excerpt

“How long ago did we lose contact with them?” the voice echoed inside Cord’s head as if it came through his two-way communication headset. Cord concentrated and thought; we haven’t heard from them in a couple of days. He didn’t like not knowing where his neighbors were. Cord knew that Richard’s telepathic powers would pick up on his response but if he concentrated it was easier for Rich to hear what he was thinking.

Crouched just inside the tree line of their neighbor’s yard Cord looked down the barrel of his ACR rifle scanning the property. The composite bodied rifle was light and felt reassuring in his hands.

The ACR was a prime candidate to replace the venerable M-16. It was versatile and adaptable to various conditions. Having multiple calibers on a single platform it would meet different demands. Cord had the pleasure of field testing the rifle in the desert.

After serving as an Army officer for fifteen years Cord Tranum decided not to reenlist but instead remained in the Middle East working for a private security company. The pay and benefits were far better than active duty and there was none of the bullshit associated with being Government Issue. Cord would have worked over seas longer but with the negative press from the rising civilian casualties he decided it was time to come home. Even after he was back in America his skills remained honed and those skills kept him and his pacifist wife alive as they traveled to join their friends.  The journey to the Root farm was treacherous. They traveled over some unfamiliar territory while the world was being turned on end. Cord grinned as he reminisced.

Being late August in Georgia the heat and humidity are still unbearable even at this hour. What he wouldn’t give for some Air Conditioning right about now. During the summer months the AC in his old house could barely keep up with the temperatures. It meant a big power bill but there was no way to cope without the AC. It’s not as if opening a window or turning on some fans would stifle the heat so he sucked it up and paid the damn bill. Maybe when they got back Evan would let him run the AC a little while tonight. He slept so much better when the room was cooler. Those creature comforts were always a good motivator for completing the mission.

Now because of things hiding and waiting in the dark, everyone knew they needed to keep in touch. The members of this community were always in communication. Even though this neighborhood was a group of farms spread out over miles in the rural part of the county.

Neighbors used to help each other out but as technology grew and people moved farther and farther away they started becoming more self-sufficient. Tractors with satellite navigation did the work of several farm hands. Now with technology taking a backseat to survival helping out your neighbor is important again.
People forgot how to care for one another. They became materialistic and spent their time trying to outdo one another. Racing from one of their children’s sport practice to the others ballet practice and all the while bragging about how their child was accepted to this college or that university. People were selfish, self-centered and self-serving. That way of life had become the norm.

Perses changed everything. Now the people who were left had to work together if they want to survive.

Sweat poured from Cords brow as he scanned the yard waiting for Tim Lavin to return from scouting the perimeter. The night was still and without a sound. One hundred percent humidity made the air thick so it stuck to the skin. A full moon hung in the evening sky and bathed their surroundings in a warm blue/white light.
Wiping the sweat from his brow he could hear the buzzing of mosquitoes in his ear. They would be one more nuisance he could do without but at least they were still small here. He had heard stories of some giant mosquitoes that would literally carry people off. Every state in the south claimed they had the biggest mosquitoes. No one wanted to claim that prize any longer.

He looked to his wife Violet. He could see her ivory skin glisten in the moonlight and her blue eyes glowed slightly absorbing all the light they could which allowed her to see in darkened conditions. He could tell by the look on her face that she was nervous; this wasn’t the sort of thing she liked. Violet was a pacifist and disliked the use of violence to solve problems. It took her a while to get comfortable enough with a gun to shoot it much less use it in a firefight. She stuck mainly to pistols often needing a free hand to heal someone.

She was still as beautiful as ever. When the metamorphosis started neither one of them knew what was going to happen. Violet mutated physically into what would later be called the elven race. Her skin didn’t turn gray like Lavin’s but turned lighter almost like ivory. She gained elven vision and heightened senses.
No one knew what the outcome of their friends and loved ones once it all started. After those changes were complete friends and families were divided some even became enemies. She was one of the lucky ones that when they changed physically they weren’t disfigured; turned into monsters. Some didn’t survive at all.
Violet gained the ability to heal wounds with her touch. It took her a while to learn the concentration part of her healing touch while being shot at but on the trip to Evan’s farm she became proficient. Cord would have died on the trip if she hadn’t kept her wits about herself. Unlike others in the medical field she did not require the use of gloves. First of all she had to have contact with the skin to be able to heal but what kept her immune to germs and disease was her new race.

Her blue eyes met his and she gave him a reassuring smile. Returning the smile Cord then looked to Evan’s group about thirty feet from his position. They all scanned their surroundings as they had been trained.

Author Bio:
Shannon Phoenix always wrote stories. She watched the characters take on their lives within her mind, and began to write down what they were doing. She would write the stories and then let them go. But a few years ago, she got caught writing those stories. You know... those stories.
To her surprise, the person who found her stories loved her characters as much as Shannon did. She tentatively allowed others to read the stories, as well, and it was from that first foray into the scary world of letting others read her 'little tales' that Shannon Phoenix Books was born.
Shannon lives in New Hampshire with her husband, her daughter, and their family cat. Her full time job is parenting, her part time job is as a mother's helper to a family friend, and her passion is letting the characters in her mind out on paper--or keyboard, as the case may be.
Welcome to Shannon Phoenix's Books. May you find the magic in your own life.

Short Excerpt  A Wolf’s Song:

The wolf shimmered and distorted obscenely as bright sparks flickered around him. She closed her eyes to clear them, and opened them again just as the wolf vanished to leave a man in his place. A very, very handsome bear of a man, at that. She blinked and stared.
He was very tall, well over six feet, probably close to six and a half feet. His broad, powerful body was corded with muscle definition, his belly not flat so much as ridged with blatant muscle definition. His hair was the color of wheat, ripe for harvest in the Autumn sunshine. His eyes were golden in his slightly rugged, slightly surfer-boy face, matching the pale hair. More blond hair tracked down that powerful stomach to where... To where she really wasn't going to look, no matter how much she might want to.
“Death is a werewolf?” she asked, realizing belatedly how nonsensical she sounded.
“Desiree!” he said, his voice familiar and rich, harmony flowing through it like an old fashioned acapella group. Then he chuckled. “I'm not death. I think he has a scythe and a robe or something. And I'm naked.”
Death apparently had a sense of humor, as well.
“Yes,” she said. “I noticed.” She reached for his mind to see what was so funny, but found only quiet. “So are you going to get it over with?”
     “Get what over with?”
“You killed them. So kill me, too.”
His eyebrows nearly crawled up onto his scalp. “They were monsters. Why would I kill you? Are you a monster, too?”
“No,” she said. Then quietly, “I just want to die.”
     He chuckled again.
“Are you laughing at me?” She crossed her arms over her chest. This was serious business and she didn't appreciate his attitude. It wasn't bad enough that he was a werewolf—which should be myth just like vampires... and he was here to kill her. She didn't need for him to be a smart-ass about it.
He made an obvious attempt to rein in his mirth. “No, ma'am. I'm standing on your stairs butt-ass naked. I hardly think I'm in the position to laugh at you, now am I?” His lip quirked again in contrast with his words.

VBT: Faces in the Water by Tonya Macalino spotlight and giveaway

I am excited to welcome Tonya Macalino, author of Faces in the Water here today. Let's give her a big welcome!

A Cure for the Common Stigma…of Indie Publishing

by Tonya Macalino

Electing to become an indie author went against everything I’d grown up working toward as a writer. To somehow force my ego to drop the idea of gaining the validation of the publishing industry, to “lower” myself into that pool of people who chose to navigate the book marketing waters alone—a.k.a. people who wrote crap, but wanted to be published anyway—wow, what an appealing option. Sign me up!

So how did I get myself past that and make the leap? The business woman in me simply couldn’t deny the market trends: bookstores folding, the traditional publishing houses teetering, the enhanced print-on-demand solutions emerging, and the dwindling opportunities for unpublished authors to break into print. And, honestly, the emerging indie publishing market appealed to the entrepreneur in me as well. I wanted in before someone found a way to close the floodgates. I didn’t want to be the writer standing on the sidelines saying, “Damn, if only…”

So I jumped.

And it was liberating and exciting and unbelievably grueling, but I was published!

And then the thrill began to fade. Pretty soon stark reality reminded me of what I’d known from the start: building a following when you were in a pool stigmatized as “the people who wrote crap,” was like keeping your head above water when the breakers pounded down on you. Agony.

I needed a solution. I needed some way to prove to the justifiably skittish readers of the world that what I wrote was worth their time and money.

Bizarrely, just as I was accepting this, a solution fell into my lap. At a conference, a group of indie authors approached me: the Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). They were working on a NIWA Seal of Quality (NSQ) application process that would do just that. Using an approved list of professional publishing standards, they planned to form a review panel and begin building a list of NSQ approved indie books.

I needed absolutely no prompting this time. I was in.

My books entered the finalized review process just a few days ago. Am I nervous? Of course! But I know I can also take the results, refine my work, and apply again if I need to. The entrepreneur in me is excited again for the possibilities this will open up.

And so is the writer!

Faces in the Water (The Shades of Venice, #1)Faces in the Water
By Tonya Macalino

Who created that slide of silk across your skin as you reached for your cinematic lover? Who recorded the crushing weight of the grizzly as you fought for your life in the fictional wilderness? It is Lone Pine Pictures’ Alyse Kate Bryant who wraps your body in the story only your mind was privy to before.

A brilliant sensory immersion artist and a wild daredevil, Alyse will do almost anything for the perfect sensory file, but the violent death of her father has her teetering on the very edge of reckless sanity.

For just one night, Alyse seeks refuge in the arms of a beautiful stranger.

And her recklessness finally has consequences.

Now Alyse finds herself trapped in the flooded ruins of Venice, a quarantine camp for the carriers of Sleepers’ Syndrome. But it can never be that simple. Because the Sleepers’ Syndrome carriers who populate the camp are no longer as human as they seem.

The city of legend is bringing its legends back to life.

They come now, Alyse.

Run.

Short Excerpt:

But this time the gate had a guardian.

I felt her before I saw her, that same surge of power I’d felt from Jürgen, but more elemental, more penetrating. Both Matteo and I stopped abruptly. His grip on me tightened.

She took form from the shadows that clung to the structure where the light couldn’t penetrate the fog. The delicate lines of her face took shape first, upward sloping eyes, cheeks, and jaw. Her skin had the same pale hue as the clouds around her and her eyes were a ghostly blue, narrowed coyly. She stepped forward and Matteo went completely still beneath my hands. Her long, long silvery hair danced around her face and her glittering gown flowed in the same mysterious storm. My whole body screamed a warning at a mind that had long since gone numb.

Then she laughed, a light airy sound, completely at odds with the seductive threat I felt coming off her.

“Ah, Matteo, are you going to hide her from Hadria? Keep her for yourself?”

Matteo jerked into motion.

“Get lost, Cirena.”

Again the tinkling laugh. She tossed her head back, her hands clasped in merriment. Matteo’s arm turned to steel as he held me against him and pushed his way around her. She floated easily aside, her glee never faltering as she watched us.

“Oh, little Matteo, but what if I want her for myself?”
