I truly enjoyed this book. My favorite part of any romance book that I read is the chase/pursuit, the lengths that characters will go to woo the one they want to spend the rest of their life with. Rhys Trahaearn, the Iron Duke knows what he wants and he is very used to getting it. I enjoyed that even when he made mistakes that would push Mina away he just kept moving forth with his pursuit. He just found a solution to his bumble and moved on along. This is a very persistent man. I am sure it has much to do with his time spent as a pirate. His time spent as a pirate adds much action to this book. After a corpse is dropped on his doorstep and law enforcement is notified he has to insert himself into the investigation instead of taking care of the problem on his own (which is what he would have preferred to do.)
Mina has had a very difficult life. She is a Horde half breed. The people she lives among are very cruel to her. She is also a police inspector, a job that would typically go to a man. These things have made her one tough heroine. For every bit of effort Rhys puts towards getting her in his bed she pushes twice as hard to keep him away from her. She is just as attracted to him as he is to her. She has a very difficult life filled with ridicule due to her heritage. She knows any relationship with him will just add more difficulties to her life. While investigating a murder Mina and Rhys uncover an elitist group trying to bring down every living being in the country that Mina calls home. The action is constant in this exciting fast paced book. All this action surrounds one of the sweetest romances.
I am a very picky gal when it comes to reading order and reading all that is within a series. The prequel to this book Here There Be Monsters in the anthology Burning Up can be skipped and you won’t be confused in any manner. I do suggest that you read though, it’s very good. This is a very unique series. Brook has developed a fascinating one of a kind world with numerous interesting characters. I have full intentions of reading the next book in the series. Yasmeen is the lead female in it. She was in the prequel and had a large role in this book. I am very curious about her ears…..

  1. I love starting a series with each book already released and ready to be read back to back, however with this one may just get my copy of The Iron Duke down prior to the rest of the books being available... Sounds like a nice entertaining start to the series, thanks for the review Vanessa it gives me the kick to read it sooner than later!

  2. I not into the steampunk so much but if you liked it I will try it.
