I am not a fan of Young Adult. This book is most certainly YA. I am not sure how I missed that in the purchasing of the book, yet I did. This is a really good book though.  I enjoyed it to the point that I will by the second in the series in August when it hits the shelves. There are too many unanswered questions left at the end of this book not to (mostly what was said in that letter?).
I liked John’s (Number 4) story. He wants to stay alive! What human doesn’t? John is not human though. He is an alien from the planet Lorien. He has been on Earth for ten years now with his Cepan (guardian), Henri. They have moved countless times since their arrival. They are constantly on the run from the Mogadorians, they race of alien being that invaded and destroyed the life on Lorien. Nineteen Loriens escaped to Earth on a ship, nine Garde children with Legacy gifts, their nine Cepans and a pilot.
John finds himself at a new school, with a new identity in Paradise, Ohio. His life on Earth has been dull and uneventful due to the constant moving, the secrets of his true origins and the fact that he has to live as under the radar as possible. Well life as he knows it is about to change and he is going to kiss the radar goodbye! He makes quite a few mistakes and many poor decisions because of those mistakes. He acquires things in Paradise that he has not enjoyed elsewhere, friends, enemies (yes he will eventually befriend his initial enemies) and a girlfriend. Secrets are being let out of the proverbial bag, or in John’s case the Lorien Chest. He has lived carefully for ten years now, but he decides love and friendship here are more important than continuing living cautiously. With maturity comes a Loriens Legacy gifts. These are the gifts that give John the ability to fight and defend himself from the Mogadorains. The more John uses his gifts the more people find out that he is not normal. The more people that are aware of this, the sooner the Mogadorains find him.
**Be prepared with a box of tissue for the last 30 pages of the book.

  1. I am not a fan of YA but I picked this book up on audible. I figure I will get rooked into seeing the movie so I need to listen to the book first.
