Author Interview: L.E. Waters

I'm turning over the blog to Chandra today. So my wonderful followers...y'all get to be thoroughly entertained by two Diva's and one of the Diva's drive a Jeep Wrangler.Yes, all sorts of awesomeness happening today! Let's welcome Chandra and the very talented author L.E.Waters

Chandra: Who is the real L. E. Waters so that we can get to know her better?
L.E.: People can get to know me better on my blog. I’m a bit of an introvert, but I’m chatty once you get to know me. My thirst for knowledge never ceases and I find myself constantly Googling anything that crops up as the day goes on. I am technologically challenged and spelling is not my strong suit (thank goodness for spell check and editors). If I wasn’t devoting my sparse free time to writing, I’d be gardening, crafting, or volunteering to help injured wildlife. I was wild as a child, but I’m acclimating to domestic life fairly well (although I still seek out adventure in my imagination).

Chandra: Do you live to work as a writer or write to work?
L.E.: Thankfully, I already have a job: a full-time mom. The pay is good and I have two adorable perks! I don’t write as a means of income—I’d be happy if I can recover expenses and save a little to get the next book published. Writing is just something that I have to do. My mind is full of characters, plot twists, and historical facts that I have to share.

Chandra: How did you feel once your first book was published?
L.E.: Scared! I released my mind-child out into the world and wasn’t sure how it would be received. However, I was so proud to see that I finished what I had set out to complete. It also was an amazing day when I held that paperback in my hands.

Chandra: The cover of “Infinite Sacrifice” is awesome. Tell us about the design.
L.E.: Oh, thank you so much! This cover was burned into my mind as soon as the idea was conceived. The infinity symbol is important to the story as well as an overall symbol of the endless lessons learned. When I think about sacrifice, Christ’s crown of thorns came to mind and influenced the thorned infinity symbol. I found this image of the ethereal beach and my amazing cover artist Digital Donna finessed the rest!

Chandra: A lot of historical research appears to have been spent as you prepared to write this book. What was the easiest time period to research for “Infinite Sacrifice”?
L.E.: The farther back I went in time, the scarcer the historical record. I had to dig so much deeper and make more connections on my own in order to imagine living in that time. I found there was very little material specifically on Spartan women, but that also made it easier since I could gather all my research in a few books. The black plague/medieval times had many books to research and sometimes that makes it so much harder. I definitely enjoy all the research though, I could keep going and going if I didn’t set a deadline.

Chandra: How did you decide what time periods to write about in “Infinite Sacrifice”?
L.E.: This was so hard for me! I’ve even toyed with the idea of another reincarnation series just to explore other time periods and events I couldn’t include. I let inspiration direct me as to which eras I wanted to feature and those plots were born as I was researching. Most importantly, I didn’t want to write a clichéd history. For example, I wanted to show people the agricultural and civilized Viking settlement through the eyes of a thrall instead of the clichéd barbarian Viking warrior. In all my stories, I tried to reveal a history through a fresh perspective.

Chandra: What was your favorite time period in your book “Infinite Sacrifice”?
L.E.: Oh, these questions are so good! Well, like only a mother would say, I love them all! Not all of the time periods in Infinite Sacrifice were my favorite eras before I researched them. I have always been drawn to some of the later periods (Renaissance, Revolutionary War, American Civil War), but now I can honestly say they all have a special place in my heart.

Chandra: How many times have you been reincarnated and who were you?
L.E.: I can only hope that I’ve got many lives behind me! I would be pleased if reincarnation were possible since I have such an affinity for history. Many times I’ve wished that I were able to experience certain events first hand. Sometimes the thought of spending eternity in heaven worries me since I fear I might crave some more adventures. It’s nice to think that maybe we could have a choice to visit earth again. I’ve never been regressed (I would love to give that a try someday for kicks), but I do have strong attachments to ancient Ireland, Native American tribes, colonial times, American Civil War, and the Victorian era.

Chandra: What do we have to look forward to when picking up a copy of your next book “Infinite Devotion”?
L.E.: I hope that you’ll enjoy reading about a softer side of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia, the tragic Spanish Armada battle told from the vanquished perspective, and the fun exploits of the charming and dapper Irish Robin Hood, Redmond O’Hanlon.

Chandra: What is your favorite genre to read and why?
L.E.: When I’m not reading historical non-fiction, lately I’ve got my nose in an indie read. I don’t stick to a specific genre really. I rely on personal recommendations or fantastic reviews to find good books. I love supporting fellow indie authors that have taken a professional approach and I can’t believe how many amazing indie books there are out there. Plus, the price is right!

Chandra: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers and fans?
L.E.: THANK YOU! Thank you for giving my book a try and thank you for letting me know how my book has touched you. Nothing gives me more purpose and inspiration than when my readers tell me why they enjoyed my book. It means so much to me.

Thank you as well for interviewing me on your Jeep-tastic site (I drive a Jeep Wrangler too!). You came up with such fun and unique questions. It was a pleasure to answer them!

Book Description:

"Maya’s shocked to discover it’s not the heaven she imagined; in fact, a life of adventure begins the moment you die.

Zachariah, her faithful spirit guide, explains the rules of the dead: in order to regain complete awareness and reunite with loved ones all souls must review their previous lives.

Maya plunges warily into her turbulent pasts as a sociopathic High Priest in ancient Egypt; an independent mother protecting a dangerous secret in glorious Sparta; an Irish boy kidnapped and enslaved by Vikings; and a doctor’s wife forced to make an ethical stand in plague-ridden England.

All the while, Maya yearns to be with those she cares about most and worries that she hasn’t learned all of heaven’s most vital lessons. Will she be forced to leave the tranquility of heaven to survive yet another painful and tumultuous life? Or worse, accept the bitter reality of having to go back alone?"

Excerpt:

"He dies before dawn. Covering him with a shroud, I tuck a coin in his hand for burial. I take a black flag from a vacant house to signal Ulric. Instead of returning to the abbey, I walk down to the river to watch the sunrise. A cold breeze blows, and I pull my hands within the fluted sleeves of my cloak. The giant sun breaks the horizon with an ember glow, causing everything around me to burn red. Even the river shimmers crimson. Something catches my eye—objects drifting on the surface, breaking the reflection of the water in flashes. I bring my hand up to shield the glare, and I'm horrified to see dozens of naked, bloated, blue bodies floating down the Thames.
I turn to walk home as someone screams out, shattering the silence of the city, "The Apocalypse is here!"
    He might just be right."
