Adam with Love is written in a series of childhood memories and current
events in Adam’s life. After being away from his childhood home for five years
he has returned to the Gray Zone. Adam’s mother tried to give him some preparation
for what would come with his adult life. He will become Lesser-Bred. Somewhere
in Adam’s DNA is that of Kin, the Dragons. He will lose what keeps him human.
Having lived in the Gray Zone for ten years he knows some of what to expect. He
also knows that this is a journey that he can’t take alone. He’s hoping now
that he has returned he will have the chance to reconnect with Ean his closest childhood
friend. He knows Ean will help him and keep him safe. It’s what Ean does.
Ean is
human only in DNA. This
makes his character highly amusing. He will never go through the metaphysical changes that his
friend Adam will. He has been raised by Batu, a Dominant Kin Male. Ean has
never known human contact, human emotions or a mother’s love. Ean is more Kin
than many of the Males he lives in the Zone with. He does not have the same priorities
as a typical human young adult either. His main goal in life is to belong to a
Male Kin. If Ean can belong then he can keep Adam. Ean will have the means to
take care of Adam once he belongs.
I loved
going on this time traveling journey that tells the story of how two young boys
grew up together and eventually came to recognize their feelings as love. The
way the story is presented with the childhood memories from both Ean’s and Adam’s
perspective was great. I enjoyed knowing what happened in their childhood that
led them to where they come back together in their adult life. Wilder’s writing
paints such a clear picture of these characters. The world, the characters, the
happenings are so vividly realistic. The depths of Adam’s and Ean’s feelings
for one another are heartbreaking. One does not know how to express his
feelings, the other is unsure of what he is feeling. The emotions run so high
in To Adam with Love that the passion
is almost tangible.
I’ve
read quite a few of Wilder’s books from her various series. This book is set in
the same world, but is a separate series that does not require one to have read
any of her other work. I can promise once you step in to this dark world of Dragons,
the Den’s and Gray Zone you will be reading her other books. Wilder has created
a very gritty world where you want to know more about the people, Kin, and
Lesser-Bred’s that live there.
My only complaint is that an epilogue would have been nice at the end. It would
have shown that the endings events worked. (Trying to avoid a spoiler) I
emailed the author and yes, the belonging worked.
