This story is so heartbreaking. Kestrel and Andrik have both lost their loves. Kestrel a spellcaster has lost her dragon, something that few survive. Andrik a dragonkin has lost his human wife to raider attacks. Having lived for centuries as an outcast and blamed for her dragons death Kestrel decides to complete her dragons final request, to go to Blaze Mountain, home of the wild dragons. In hopes of finding out more about the gifts that Castigan bestowed upon her as he was passing Kestrel finally decides to go on this journey. Shortly after her arrival the dragonkin come to notice her differences, that she is more than a spellcaster, that her dragon Castigan left her with a piece of him. Andrik who has never meet Kestrel feels recognition towards her and is drawn to her. After having found a place where she is no longer an outcast and has found someone she wishes to spend her life with she is called back home when it is attacked by rogue dragons.
The romance in this story takes some time to progress, but once it starts it is very passionate with an incredible connection. I loved the mate bond and the bond that a spellcaster forms with their dragon. The connection between Kestrel and Andrik has a huge amount of depth to it. They are also provide a well needed healing to one another.
