I was a bit disappointed by this book in the Envy Chronicles. Please keep in mind that these books need to be read as a series and in the correct order. This book SHOULD NOT be read as a stand-alone.
Theo and Selena don’t really connect. They both seem just attracted to one another. The passion and romantic connection seems lacking. This leads to not so hot sex. She’s too busy making a fuss about their age difference. As we know from the previous books Theo is close to 80 years old. He was wounded during the Change and was left with a computer integrated circuit in his back. The circuit in his back is fitting since he and his brother Lou are Envy’s computer junkies. I liked the concept of how Selena was different from most people. She has the ability of being able to see a death aura around people. She knows exactly when they are about to take their last breath. Selena first noticed this ability when she was a child. She has earned the title of the Death Lady. That is not her only ability though. Selena gets up close with the gangas on a regular basis. She helps their human soul pass into the afterlife. Theo being an alpha male has major issues with her putting herself in danger. Selena is such a secretive woman that will not share the reasons and the compulsions behind why she does what she does. This is the cause of much conflict and strain on her and Theo’s relationship. Theo is also mending a heart that Sage broke.
Few questions were answered, more were presented. I think that is typical of series books. The readers do get to find out how the gangas came to be. The characters from the previous books in the series get very little play in this book. We do not get much insight into the Elite. Remy is still around and still running from the residents of Envy. I keep wondering if there is a chance we might see her and Wyatt getting a book. They certainly share Dantes well. The readers learn a little bit more about Remington Truth. Selena had a personal interaction 20 years before. (can’t tell ya, big spoiler). The bounty hunters are up to no good and Theo has the opportunity to see first-hand what happens when they visit a settlement. This book just did not have a climactic battle for the good of the new world that we have seen in the previous books.
I have really enjoyed this series thus far. I hate that this book left me feeling, meh. I have full intentions of continuing to read the series. I just hope I enjoy the next one more than this one. I believe I read somewhere that it is Fence's book.
The book wraps up with Lou getting to help Vonnie move a bookshelf! Yes, this is a good thing.
