This is the first book in a brand new series with a great cast of characters. The readers are even given a likable villain. Returning from fetching coffee for the office Jillian Conrad’s life takes an unexpected turn. She is injected with an unknown experimental substance that will change her life forever. Declan has been sent to gather an experimental substance to help him with his job as a vampire hunter. This substance is supposed to kill vampires. As he approaches the researcher for the syringe of vampire killer the researcher injects it into Jillian. What is Declan supposed do? He was sent to bring the substance back to his adoptive father, so his only choice is to take Jillian back to his father. The adventure and truth learning experience thereafter is great. Jillian is very unwilling in this adventure. She just wants her old life back. Declan soon discovers so much of his life is a lie. He also has a complete lack of social skills (for understandable reasons, there’s potential for a spoiler here.) Just like Jillian, the readers can’t help but like Declan. You want a better life for him, you want him to soften up and get some, any pleasure from life.
The spine classifies this book as a paranormal romance. It is a paranormal (vamps and dhampyr), the readers are given a couple who are strongly attracted to each other, a very steamy sex scene, but not a happily ever after in the whole I love you and we will be together forever aspect that you get with a romance. Although at the end you do have a couple that are going to see where the attraction will take them. I enjoyed this book. I will continue reading the series. I love Jillian’s felling towards Declan. She wants him to be happy. She wants him to have some normalcy in his life. Poor Declan, his story is so heartbreaking. If you like abused, mistreated, scarred heroes, well there is a new one to keep an eye on (yes, the pun was intended).

  1. I might put this one on my list. A lot of people have really liked it--I am only hesitant because I am in the mood for HEA's right now :)
