The Highlands, June

Deep in a cave . . .

Elena Griffin adjusted her helmet while praying the LED light atop it didn’t go out. She wasn’t the adventurous, adrenaline junkie kind, but when her new boss told her they were going caving, there wasn’t much Elena could do but go along with it.

“This will be fun,” Sloan said with a wide grin.

Elena forced a smile and projected confidence she didn’t feel. “Of course.”

She’d done many things while growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, but caving wasn’t one of them. Something about the dark, musty place wasn’t somewhere she wanted to be.

Everything in her told her it was a bad idea. No matter Elena’s objections, Sloan had shown her the safety equipment, as well as how to use it, and assured her everything was going to be fine.

“I’ve been caving for years, Elena. I’ve been wanting to explore these caves for some time now, and it’s the perfect opportunity.”

“Did you get the go-ahead from the landowners?” Elena asked as she felt the thick rope and carabineers at her side. Mentally she went through how to use them, trying to become familiar in case something unexpected happened.

Despite Sloan showing her the Italian hitch knot at least three dozen times, Elena hadn’t been able to get the hang of it, and all she could pray for was that their lives didn’t depend on her tying a knot.

“What the Dreagans don’t know won’t hurt them,” Sloan said in her cheery British accent. She winked at Elena. “Get that American ass moving!”

Elena watched Sloan walk into the cave. This was Elena’s last chance to turn back, to tell Sloan to forget it. But this new job was everything she’d spent the last six years of her life working toward.

So what if she had to spend a day in a cave to cement her relationship with Sloan. It was worth it to finally be in London, to finally be climbing that ladder of success that had always seemed out of reach.

She took a deep, fortifying breath and followed Sloan.

The warm fleece hoodie Elena wore over her long-sleeve shirt didn’t stop the damp from settling into her bones almost instantly. It was going to take Elena a while before she got used to the cold, especially the damp cold of Scotland. In summer.

The only thing she could be happy about was knowing that she wouldn’t be staying in Scotland for long.

Since Elena knew nothing of caving, she’d done some research in the early hours of the morning when she should have been sleeping. She knew they should have at least four members to their party, but Sloan had assured her they’d be gone only a few hours and would be fine with just the two of them.

Elena didn’t exactly want to start off her new job by questioning everything Sloan said. Still, the fact of it was that it was just the two of them. And it worried the hell out of her.

That and they were on private property.

Dreagan Distillery

Hal shut and locked the doors to the distillery for the day before he turned and looked out over the land. Snow blanketed everything and the light the crescent moon cast upon the ground made it look almost as if it were glowing.
The need to lose himself in the land in the forest sometimes was overwhelming, as it was this night. Other times he could ignore the call, but not tonight.
Hal didn’t bother to tell the others where he was going. He simply walked down the steps and into the night. The weather didn’t faze him.
His boots crunched in the thick snow, but he never noticed. His gaze was trained on the forest ahead. Every one of them answered to something, and for Hal it was the forest.
Always had been.
Always would be.
Once he was in the trees, he took a deep breath and lifted his face to the sky. Snow landed on his lashes and rain dripping from the limbs above pelted his face.
It was glorious.
Hal smiled and spread his arms wide. He touched his chest, through his jacket and sweater, to the tattoo beneath.
A person could get lost in the glens of the Highlands, and there were thousands of glens. Which made it a perfect place for Hal and the others like him to stay hidden.
It had been a long time since he’d allowed his other self to show, his dragon self. And for some reason, this night he desperately yearned to spread his wings and fly.
To feel the wind around him as he soared through the sky.
He still remembered flying low over the trees, the leaves brushing against his underside as the sun beat on him. He hadn’t needed to hide then. For once upon a time, he had been able to call to his brethren and listened to their roars fill the forest.
So very long ago he had lived a completely different life. Back before the humans betrayed them, before a war that changed everything.
A sound off to Hal’s right had him turning his head in that direction. He dropped his arms as his eyes fastened on a large, fast-moving animal loping through the trees.
Hal let his coat drop from his arms as he sprinted toward the animal. As he neared, he realized it was a dog—a very large dog. And the only person near Dreagan land who had such a dog was Dan Hunter.
With more frustration than Hal wanted to concede, he came to a halt. He had been able to take flight, but now he had to chase a dog. For several moments he watched the Great Dane running, his tongue lolling out the side of his mouth.
There had been a few times in Hal’s life where he’d felt that free, been that free. Those times were the barest of memories now.
When a person was as old as Hal, time blurred.
It was so easy to get lost in his memories, of what had once been, and what he had once been. But to allow himself to get absorbed in such recollections was not wise.
He pulled himself back from the brink and gave a loud, short whistle, which pulled Duke up short. The Great Dane turned his head to Hal and issued a deep, booming bark in greeting.
“Come here, lad,” Hal called.
Immediately, the dog ran to him, his tail wagging.
Hal rubbed the dog’s massive head. “It’s no’ like Dan to allow you to run like this. Nor is it like you to run off. What’s the problem, lad?”
Duke jerked against the hold Hal had on his collar. Hal narrowed his eyes. He’d learned very early in life to listen carefully when animals tried to speak. They might not be speaking your language, but they were talking. It was obvious Duke was trying to tell him something.
“Show me,” Hal said, and released the collar.
Duke took off at a run and Hal was quick to follow. Dreagan land extended far as the eye could see, and Dan’s cottage was the closest anyone lived to Dreagan.
It was because Dan rarely rented the property and didn’t cause any problems that Hal and the others hadn’t made a point of getting rid of him.
Hal easily kept pace with the Great Dane as they traversed over the land. When they crested the last hill that overlooked Dan’s cottage, Duke stopped and whined.
Dan’s Corsa could be seen by the light of the moon and despite the heavy snowfall. Thankfully, the rain had tapered off, but the snow made it difficult to see where Dan was.
Duke butted Hal’s hand with his head before he took off down the slope to the cottage. Hal had memorized the lay of the land centuries ago and knew where the boulders lay hidden in the snow.
He leapt down the slope and landed in thick snow. Duke caught up with him, and they both ran the rest of the way down the side of the mountain.
Hal rushed to the front door, but found it locked and all the lights out. When Hal turned to look for Duke, he found the Great Dane standing beside the car.
That’s when Hal noticed there was someone inside. In three strides he was beside the car. He tapped on the window, but the figure didn’t move.

Cassie and I have something in common, we travel the same. If you ever want to hear disaster stories about travel talk to me or Cassie. Oh, poor Cassie. She has been forced to move into her brother’s rental cottage. That is just the beginning of her problems though. The move was not smooth. Cassie is learning all of Murphy’s Laws when it comes to this relocation. There is a perk to this move, the distillery next door is full of hot men. Those men have the task of protecting both dragons and humans. One of them just happens to want to keep her warm. Hal and his Dragon King ilk cannot feel love for a human. This is a punishment placed on them by the King of the Kings. This punishment seemed too overkill in my opinion once all was found out about it.

I was really into this story, until the naked man with a sword fell from the sky. I had a hard time taking the novella seriously after that point. The insta-love that Cassie and Hal felt I never picked up on how they got there. It was very rushed. I know it’s a novella with a small amount of pages, I still needed more. Several things were brought up that seemed important, and then was never mentioned again. The Silvers moving for instance seemed important, mentioned, moved on. I still have no clue what happened to Cassie’s brother.

I will give the second eBook a try when it becomes available. I love paranormal romance. Dragon shifters always grab my attention. I’m hoping that since the world has been created and some of the vital components have been explained that some of the finer details will get more elaboration in the next novella. Novellas always leave me wanting more, this one has left me with wanting to know more about Tristan, the Silvers, and the portal.

I think the first thing I need to point out is that this is the first book I have ever read by Donna. This is important because it is also a spin off from another series her Dark Sword series. I never picked up that series due to the fact that it is historical. When I heard that her Warriors were going to jump through time and have a spin off series set in present day I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. I can’t wait to read more about these Warriors and Druids. I even enjoyed the villains (more on that in a sec.)

Midnight’s Master is Logan’s book. If you followed her other series you’ve known him for some time. For newbies like me I met Logan as he was being thrown a little over four hundred years into the future. He and a few of his brothers have come to this time to continue their quest in ridding the world of the evil Deirdre. He also has to find one of his missing brother Warriors.

Gwynn happens to be in the same area of Scotland as Logan. She’s looking for her father. He has been missing for close to three weeks. Logan immediately senses that Gwynn is more than what she believes herself to be. Part of Logan’s mission in life is to protect the Druid’s. He tries to convince himself he is merely protecting her, that he isn’t good enough for her, he fails. His failure in the lies he tells himself makes for a really sweet romance.

The pertinent information and happenings from the six DarkSword books is retold in a very smooth manner. It is through Logan and Gwynn’s conversations that new Donna readers find out key events from the other books. I liked this. It worked well for me and did not ever feel like rehashing. Logan has to give Gwynn the details of her history and heritage, it just happens to be the Druid and Warrior history from the other books.

Logan and Gwynn eventually team up with the Warriors and Druids from the other series. They are immortal after all and have been waiting for their friends to return to them. This is a great group of characters. I liked their personalities and what they contributed to the team. They all have a like goal when it comes to ridding the world of the evil Deirdre. I read many series books, I like to know what past couples are up to, so this is a boon for Donna’s Dark Sword fans.

All good books need a despicable villain or villains. I really liked Deirdre and Declan. They are evil, they have an even bigger evil backing them and giving them power. I also love to get sections of a book told from the villain’s point of view. I enjoy knowing some of what is going on in their heads, what their twisted and convoluted reasons for the things they do. Donna delivers on this front.

All is all this is an awesome book. I’m looking forward to where the series is going. I can’t wait to see what evils Deidre and Declan have planned in future books. A new Druid female was introduced towards the end. She has a very interesting ability. So if you ever thought about giving Donna a try and like me just don’t care for historicals go get this book. It is a wonder book that will immediately draw you into her world of immortal Warriors, magical Druids and the evil woman that wants to rule the world.
